Where and how you can work
Our flagship office is in Sydney, Australia, but we've made our way from down under, to hubs in Austin and San Francisco, which are now home to our US operations. So whether you're in Texas or California, you have choice in where and how you work in each of those states. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.
What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
About the Role:
Canva is looking for a new Senior Legal Counsel to be part of our highly motivated, tight-knit, and collaborative global legal team. This role will be part of the Intellectual Property (IP) specialty team and will be responsible for managing IP litigation and disputes across the globe. This is our first role dedicated to this specialty area and will help to shape Canva's litigation strategy and best practices.
This is an exciting opportunity for an IP litigator looking for their next challenge.
What You'll Do:
- You will manage all aspects of IP litigation and pre-litigation disputes, partnering with outside counsel in relevant jurisdictions.
- You'll advise business stakeholders on existing and potential litigation, including risk-mitigation.
- You will develop litigation-related policies, for example relating to legal holds, document retention and legal professional privilege.
- You will support the management of Canva's takedown processes (e.g. DMCA) and advise on platform liability issues.
- You'll provide assistance with non-IP related disputes and litigation such as contractual or consumer law claims as needed.
- You will help to shape Canva’s IP protection and enforcement strategies.
What We're Looking For:
- Admitted to the California bar.
- Experience managing IP litigation, including copyright, trademark and/or patent infringement claims, gained from a law firm or in-house.
- Understanding of intermediary liability frameworks, including the DMCA.
- A desire to be proactive and solve problems.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- A skilled communicator who can translate complex legal concepts into practical solutions.
- Tech savviness and experience with (or the ability to learn) tools like Canva, Jira, Slack and Google Workspace.
We'd Also Love if You Have:
- Experience advising high growth technology companies.
- Experience with managing litigation across multiple jurisdictions.
